I believe that a parent of a student should have the power to request that their child have another book option other than the assigned literature because of questionable information or ideas in the text. I think this because parents raise their children hoping to shield them from all of the vulgar, unclean and strictly inappropriate things in the world. At some point the child will mature and they will make their own decisions about what to read. But for the time being the parent should have control on what the school requires their kid to read. Many teachers are understanding about each families morals, values, and beliefs and how some books would go against those things. In the report it points out people who believe that censorship should not be an option.
Although there may be an assignment based on a book, i believe that a child in the class should be able to refuse to read a book. There are situations that this could be taken advantage of, but for the most part if the parent agrees that they would not want there child to take part in the reading of the book, i think that should be a perfectly available option. When a student is in school their main job is learn, respect the teachers, and complete assignments given by their teachers. I think that if an assignment is given and a parent of one of the children in the class does not feel comfortable having their child read the book or novel assigned, there should be a way to request reading a different book for the assignment.
